Garbage Cans Designed to Keep Bears Out Aug 7, 2007 11:09 PM By Krystale Noriega
Grizzly bears have their hands full with new trash cans developed by the folks at the Department of Fish and Game. Tuesday, the mayor of Island Park and others gathered at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone to see how the new garbage can would hold up. The new garbage cans were developed because some bears learn to associate people with food, and can become aggressive and dangerous. Keeping bears out of garbage is one of the best ways of keeping bears out of the places where we work, play and live. "It is important that we work to live with the bears," said Gregg Losinski, Regional Wildlife Conservation Educator. The Department of Fish and Game gathered together to show off new dumpsters, as well as educate people about bears. "We are working in the Island Park area so local businesses can see how the dumpsters work," said Losinski. The new trashcans are made out of commercial steel and are designed for anyone to use them. "It's important that a little 80-year-old grandmother can wheel that container out and use it," said Losinski. The mayor of Island Park is optimistic about the new dumpsters, " I think that they are great. The Fish and Game are doing a wonderful job of -- and the Forest Service -- of protecting the garbage, and it also protects the bears by allowing them not to be troublesome," said Mayor Tom Jewels. The garbage cans and dumpsters are not in stores just yet, but if you're interested in purchasing one, call the Regional Wildlife Conservation Center at 208-525-7290.
